8: Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away.
Matthew 26:39
- He went on a little farther and fell face down on the ground, praying, "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine."
- Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Couldn't you stay awake and watch with me even one hour?
- Keep alert and pray. Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For though the spirit is willing enough, the body is weak!"
- Again he left them and prayed, "My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away until I drink it, your will be done."
- He returned to them again and found them sleeping, for they just couldn't keep their eyes open.
2 Samuel 12:16
- David begged God to spare the child. He went without food and lay all night on the bare ground.
- The leaders of the nation pleaded with him to get up and eat with them, but he refused.
- Then on the seventh day the baby died. David's advisers were afraid to tell him. "He was so broken up about the baby being sick," they said. "What will he do to himself when we tell him the child is dead?"
Hebrews 5:7
- While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could deliver him out of death. And God heard his prayers because of his reverence for God.
Psalms 77:2
- When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I pray, with hands lifted toward heaven, pleading. There can be no joy for me until he acts.
- I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help.
- You don't let me sleep. I am too distressed even to pray!
- I think of the good old days, long since ended,
- when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and think about the difference now.
